An Amazing Endeavour by Vietnamese Students: Designing a $20,000 Batmobile from Nothing

A group of architecture students led by Nguyen Dac Chung in Hanoi, Vietnam have completed the construction of a Batmobile replica after 18 months of work, with a total cost of over $25,000. The car was based on the original Batmobile used by the character Batman in the highly acclaimed film “The Dark Knight”.

Compared to its original design, the Batmobile’s appearance has not changed much, except for some intricate details such as the exhaust pipes and the red front grille. The car’s frame is made of steel, while its body is made of fiberglass. According to Chung, the construction process did not require high-end equipment, but required a good knowledge of mechanical engineering to ensure safety and a good sense of aesthetics to create a symmetrical and eye-catching design.

The Batmobile has two seats, vertically opening doors resembling bat wings, an airfoil that can be adjusted with a pneumatic system, and tires and rims from the United States and South Korea. The suspension system consists of four front shock absorbers, two rear shock absorbers, and the vehicle weighs nearly 600 kg.

The finished version of the car was converted from a 400 cc gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine to a 30 kW electric motor located in the back, with a lithium-ion battery that can be charged. Chung says that the electric motor can achieve a maximum speed of 105 km/h with a load of up to 500 kg. During testing, the Batmobile reached an average speed of about 60 km/h.

The Batmobile was mainly built for display purposes and cannot be driven on public roads due to regulatory and technical issues. Nonetheless, it serves as an impressive example of the creativity and technical skills of its creators.
