In the first three months of 2023, the US electric car company Tesla sold more than 137 thousand electric vehicles in the Chinese market of billions of people. This number reached a record compared to the same period in previous years.

To be more precise, Tesla sold 137,429 vehicles in the first quarter of 2023 in the Chinese market. This number increased 26% compared to the first quarter of 2022 and 13% compared to the last quarter of 2022. In which, Tesla Model 3 sold 42,782 units, Model Y reached 94,647 units. Also in the first quarter of 2023, Tesla China exported 92,487 vehicles to overseas markets.

One of the main factors helping Tesla to boom sales in China is based on its aggressive pricing strategy. Specifically, Tesla reduced car prices on average by about 10% and currently, the selling price of Tesla cars in China is only about $ 30,000 to $ 40,000. This price-cutting strategy helps Tesla surpass its veteran electric car manufacturers in the country.

In March 2023 alone, Tesla delivered 76,663 vehicles, up 16% year-on-year. In which, Model Y is still the most popular model with 54,937 vehicles. In March, Tesla China also exported 12,206 cars. Currently, Tesla ranks 2nd in sales of all-electric cars in China, and is ranked first by domestic company BYD.

Since 2010, the Chinese government has actively promoted the use of electric vehicles as part of its efforts to reduce air pollution and promote sustainable transportation. The government has taken many measures to encourage consumers to buy electric vehicles, including tax exemptions and subsidies for car buyers. However, it is worth noting that China has canceled electric vehicle subsidies since January 2023. The move affects sales of electric vehicles in China, including Tesla.
