Dominic Toretto’s 1968 Dodge Charger is one of the most iconic vehicles in Hollywood history. Known for its menacing looks and powerful performance, this classic car has been a staple of the Fast & Furious franchise since the very beginning.
In the latest installment of the series, Fast & Furious 9, Dominic Toretto once again takes the wheel of his beloved Charger. However, this time around, the car has been given a major upgrade. Specifically, the car is now a wide-body version with a capacity of more than 800 horsepower.
To achieve this level of performance, the team at McCarthy’s Vehicle Effects department had to make several modifications to the car. For starters, they equipped it with a V8 HEMI Hellcat engine that was tuned to produce more than 800 horsepower. This engine was paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox Graziano, which was taken from the Lamborghini Gallardo supercar.
In addition to the engine and gearbox, the car was also given a custom-made chassis and wide-body bodykit made from SpeedKore Performance carbon fiber. Other upgrades included a Magnaflow exhaust system, sports wheels from HRE, and high-end Brembo brakes.
Inside the car, the cockpit is classic and functional, with a NOS tank that is indispensable to the character of Dominic Toretto. The plexiglass and metal visor also protect the driver from heat and engine noise, which was inspired by the Ford GT40 racing car.
According to Dennis McCarthy, the vehicle image coordinator at Universal Studios, a team of 7 people worked on the project for 4.5 months, putting in long hours every day to get the car just right. In fact, two Chargers with more than 800 horsepower had to do many parallel scenes in Glasgow, Scotland and Tbilisi, Georgia. Despite the harsh scenes, both cars emerged from filming in near-perfect condition.
The 1968 Dodge Charger has always been a fan-favorite in the Fast & Furious franchise, and this latest version is sure to thrill audiences once again. With its wide-body design, powerful engine, and high-end upgrades, this car is a true masterpiece of automotive engineering.
