Ferrari 246 GT Spider – The Ferrari Dino was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966. In order to homologate the lively V6 engine, originally designed and built for racing, Ferrari had to put at least 500 road cars into production. The small series of the sports car type Dino 206S was therefore created in cooperation with Fiat. The name “Dino” comes from Enzo Ferrari in memory of his son who died young.

From 1971 the Spider version was built. The production number was only 1274 copies, which makes the car a rare classic car today.

With its 2.4 liter engine and 2418 ccm, the Ferrari Dino reaches a top speed of 240 km/h and accelerates to 100 in 7.6 seconds. With this series of small sports cars, the 206 and the 246, the Dino’s, Ferrari set accents in a new direction. They were cheaper than the previous Ferraris and could compete with Porsche and similar competitors.

The Spider was heavier than the Ferrari Dino Coupé. The reason for this was the increased stiffening and the all-steel body used, which was built on a tubular frame. Softly curved lines draw the side line of the 246 model.
All wheels are individually suspended, which gives the Dino its sporty road holding. The outstanding technology is particularly evident in curves. Front Double wishbones with coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars.

The V6 engine of the Ferrari 246 GT Spider found its place in the rear. This 2.4 liter engine with a 12-valve cylinder head and a maximum output of 195 hp reaches the 100 km/h mark in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 248 km/h. As with the Ferrari 246GT versions, the engine is not installed lengthwise, but transversely over the rear axle. With this mid-engine, the street athlete gains stability.

As in racing, the mid-engine is installed transversely. The car had a cast iron engine block instead of the aluminum block.

The sporty origin cannot be denied in the interior either. Low-lying bucket seats and a handy steering wheel underline the feeling of speed. Fresh air is available via the removable Targa roof.

Due to the great popularity of the GT Spider models, the market is practically empty and consequently it is difficult to find one of these coveted classic cars. A well-preserved copy is currently traded for several 100-thousand euros.
